What Is Glyphosate?
Glyphosate exposure is not limited to agricultural use but also occurs through food and water contamination. Recent testing detected glyphosate in various food items, raising concerns about its public health impact. Despite regulatory agencies claiming safety, numerous studies have examined potential health risks, including cancer and neurological disorders. A 2019 study found an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in high-exposure groups, while other research has explored connections between glyphosate and autism. Due to mounting concerns, some EU countries have banned glyphosate, and Bayer has settled substantial lawsuits in the U.S. Glyphosate alternatives, such as mechanical weed removal and organic herbicides, are suggested to reduce exposure risks. While the debate over glyphosate’s safety continues, its impact on human health remains a subject of ongoing research and legal battles.
People can avoid glyphosate use with several Roundup alternatives. These include manual or mechanical methods of weed pulling, such as small and large hand tools, tillers and other mechanical methods.
Natural or organic herbicides whose active ingredients are vinegar or essential oils are also an option. Ask your local home and garden center for organic or natural herbicides that do not contain glyphosate.
